LOS ANGELES, July 12—Chanting "no justice, no peace, no racist po-lice", and then later just "no racist police", hundreds of demonstrators marched in Inglewood, California today to denounce the racist beating of Donovan Jackson-Chavis and the jailing of Mitchell Crooks, the witness who video taped the beating. Mr. Crooks was arrested outside CNN on a 3-year old warrant from northern California. While some spoke of the need for civilian review boards and investigations (which will do nothing to stop police terror or the system that requires it) and refused to condemn the "war on terrorism", others carried signs saying "Inglewood, LA, US cops, US rulers, the #1 terrorists in the world". The following is a leaflet given out at the protest.
It’s a good thing that Mitchell Crooks was present to video the viscous racist beating of Donovan Jackson-Chavis at the hands of racist cop Jeremy Morse! The Sheriffs are paying Crooks back by arresting him on a 3 year-old warrant. But if Crooks hadn’t video taped the beating of Donovan Jackson-Chavis, the world would never have seen the racist treatment that this cop has dished out systematically to residents of Inglewood for years!
Morse must be fired and jailed for racist assault on Donovan Jackson-Chavis and many other residents of Inglewood!
Some are saying that Morse is just a "rogue cop"—who has been suspended WITH PAY! But a whole group of cops were present and participated in the attack on Donovan. And all over the country, in every city and town, "rogue cops" carry out daily racist terror against black and latino youth and workers! There are over two million people in prison in the US, the majority black and latino, mostly for non-violent "crimes". Many are forced to work for pennies in prison slave labor. Rather than being the work of rogue cops, this is the systematic racist terror of US capitalism!
The LA County Board of Supervisors has just voted to close 11 of the 18 clinics in LA County, forcing many of LA’s poorest residents into long and deadly waits in over-crowded emergency rooms. They spend $400 billion on war and "homeland security" and slash healthcare. This is more racist terror! The rulers and politicians use their racist cops to try to scare us into accepting all these cuts.
The Inglewood and LA cops, and the racist cops all over the US, are the #1 terrorists against workers. The US rulers are pretending to be fighting terrorism in Afghanistan. But they are the biggest terrorists of all! Ashcroft, head of the "Justice Dept.", is sending his lawyer to "investigate" the beating of Donovan. What’s there to investigate? The facts are clear. Ashcroft just wants to look like our friend so he can trick black and latin youth into going into the army to "fight terrorism". They want to get the youth of this country to fight, kill and die for the control of oil profits for their empire around the world, killing Arab workers and youth, while they attack us at home with police terror! We should oppose the real terrorists and fight to end their terrorist capitalist system with revolution instead!
